WOW! Run (or better yet, ride) to the Museum of Art and Design to see ‘Bespoke: The Handbuilt Bicycle.’

Organized by Michael Maharam (the owner of Maharam and avid bicycle collector) and Sacha White (builder of Vanilla bicycles Portland, Oregon), the show introduces viewers to 21 road racing, cyclocross, mountain and commuter bicycles - even a child’s tricycle.

The exhibition features bicycles by: Mike Flanigan, Alternative Needs Transportation (A.N.T); Jeff Jones, Jeff Jones Custom Bicycles; Dario Pegoretti, Pegoretti Cicli; Richard Sachs, Richard Sachs Cycles; J. Peter Weigle, J. Peter Weigle Cycles; and Sacha White, Vanilla Bicycles. It is insane!

This is a Batavus “PERSONAL” delivery bike. It’s black, has one speed, a coaster brake, a kick stand, chain case, racks, and a dynamo lighting system. I discovered it in the basement of the Smith and Butler boutique in Carrol Gardens last October.

I am selling this bicycle because my therapist suggested I need to come to terms with my attraction to african-american women. No sister is going to date a 34 year old systems administrator riding a european grocery bike. However, when I would cruise slowly down Park Slope’s fifth avenue, panties would literally fly off of every white or asian woman with a stroller and a master’s degree.

I live in Williamsburg now and the bike confuses most of the women here. If I grow my moustache out a little and explain it only has one speed “like a fixie” I can sometimes get to second base. But for the most part I might as well have a soul patch and collect classic cameras. If you want to get some action I’d only take this baby out south of Atlantic Avenue.

Spring is coming and if you like flat-assed waspy moms who went to Vassar, this is the ride you need.

$300 O.B.O.

may day

Aung San Suu Kyi portrait by Shepard Fairey

The final show at Deitch Projects opens this evening and it’s a ‘giant’ one.

“Deitch Projects is pleased to present May Day, an exhibition of new work by Shepard Fairey, as its final project. Titled not only in reference to the day of the exhibition’s opening, the multiple meanings of May Day resonate throughout the artist’s new body of work. Originally a celebration of spring and the rebirth it represents, May Day is also observed in many countries as International Worker’s Day or Labor Day, a day of political demonstrations and celebrations coordinated by unions and socialist groups. “Mayday” is also the distress signal used by pilots, police and firefighters in times of emergency.”

Coinciding with Shepard Fairey’s May Day Art Show opening at Deitch Projects tomorrow, OBEY Clothing will open a pop-up shop today at Reed Space, 151 Orchard Street in Manhattan. It will be open until Sunday, May 16th.

The pop-up shop serves as both a clothing store and a visual narration of Fairey’s work to-date. Capturing the esthetic of the OBEY brand, the shop is designed to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Hand-stenciled vintage military jackets housed in shadow boxes and wood frame silk screens line the walls of the store. There is a collection of custom spray paint cans and collages displaying plastered OBEY images from around the world.

The store features a selection of 30 hand-stenciled one-of-a-kind T-shirts, limited edition Pop-up Shop T-shirts,  commemorative Shepard Fairey May Day T-shirts, and an array of men’s and women’s OBEY clothing.

OBEY May Day Pop-Up Shop

Weekdays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.

fence

Today there was a sale circular in the paper from Home Depot. On the cover was this spruce fence panel for under $30. I couldn’t help but think what a cute room divider this could be in a city apartment…painted white. Your own little piece of the American Dream…dividing your 300-square-foot $2000 per month studio so you can have some privacy from your roommate.

earth(room) day

Its Earth Day! Visit the Earth Room on Wooster Street!

The New York Earth Room has been on long-term view to the public since 1980. The work was commissioned and is maintained by Dia Art Foundation.

Walter de Maria’s 1977 work consists of 140 tons of  soil filling 3,600 square feet of space of a second-floor gallery maintained by the Dia Art Foundation (it gets raked and watered regularly). You cannot touch, walk on or photograph the soil. You don’t need to. Your senses will be in overdrive from the second you walk into the space as the rich, humid air hits you. It’s amazing.

Facts about the Earth Room:

250 cubic yards of earth (197 cubic meters)
3,600 square feet of floor space (335 square meters)
22 inch depth of material (56 centimeters)
Total weight of sculpture: 280,000 lbs. (127,300 kilos)

Where: at 141 Wooster Street (between Prince and Houston), New York City
When: Wednesday-Sunday, 12-6pm (closed 3-3:30pm)
How much: free.
