make, do with these pencil tips

RISD MFA Graphic Design’s graduating class has created a physical and virtual pop-up shop called RISD MAKE DO that will sell work related to our academic thesis process. The shop will be open at the graduate show from 20 May to 5 June and will sell original books, posters, tote bags, tshirts and more. There are plans this summer to travel to New York and other locations as well.

My favorite things at the shop thus far are Heather Phillips‘ ‘Pencil Tips.’ Heather has created a set of five pencils, each imprinted with a catchy graphic design phrase. Fun!

If you can’t make it to Providence, check it out online here or on their blog.

Hyperactivitypography from A to Z is an activity book for typographers
illustrated in a nostalgic vintage style to give it a sweet and childlike look.
The book is packed with activities, ranging from silly to hard core nerdiness.
It’s great to test your skills on and to learn new things while having fun.
Who said typography had to be stiff and boring?

Twenty five years ago, Brett Horton started collecting cycling memorabilia. The collection has grown to many thousands of items including a ton of gorgeous posters. Check out the Horton Collection here. Brett hopes to have at least 15,000 objects and 20,000 photographs scanned and online at some point soon.

See more of my faves after the jump.

Newspaper article + sharpie = Newspaper Blackout Poetry

Instead of starting with a blank page,  Austin Kleon grabs a newspaper and a permanent marker and eliminates the words he doesn’t need. He constructs through deconstruction—and the results are really amazing!

There is a collection of custom spray paint cans and collages displaying plastered OBEY images from around the world.

The store features a selection of 30 hand-stenciled one-of-a-kind T-shirts, limited edition Pop-up Shop T-shirts,  commemorative Shepard Fairey May Day T-shirts, and an array of men’s and women’s OBEY clothing.

“Kaoiro” (which means “facial expression” in Japanese) is Japanese emoticon stamp pretending to be the date stamp.

This stamp that mixing digital culture with a old style stationary has 7 belts and around 20 symbols.

You can create real kaomoji (Japanese emoticon) of 2000 or more by combining them in different ways.

If you always have it ready on your desk at school or office,  you can share your emotion to your lover in real world with a secret . \ (^ о ^) /

Because it is handmade, the actual thing might be different from the image.

doug-ampersand-1-480x960

Ampersand Identification Chart is a beautiful new limited edition letterpress print from Douglas Wilson.

Based on the Snellen eye chart, this three colour print has been designed to keep your typographic eye keen on the details of everyone’s favorite conjunction. A corruption of the words ‘and per se and,’ ampersands are often a way that the type designer can show a little bit of flair and style in their design.

Ampersand Identification Chart has been hand letterpressed by Douglas in a signed and numbered edition of 110, and is available for £35 at keepcalmgallery.com. Each print comes with an identification key that details the names and weights of all 61 ampersands.
