and knit meat…and make rainwear from those ubiquitous blue and yellow Ikea bags. Go to Instructables for details and a pattern so you can make your own.

Look what just sprouted up from designer Hafsteinn Juliusson.

Designed for people in metropolitan areas, the Growing Necklace gives you the opportunity to take a little bit of greenery with you.

Like any plant, the necklace will need to be watered and nurtured. For best results water it only once every 4-5 weeks. If properly maintained, the moss can stay green for up to 8 - 12 months.

Growing Necklace is available here for $189. Also available as a ring.

Coinciding with Shepard Fairey’s May Day Art Show opening at Deitch Projects tomorrow, OBEY Clothing will open a pop-up shop today at Reed Space, 151 Orchard Street in Manhattan. It will be open until Sunday, May 16th.

The pop-up shop serves as both a clothing store and a visual narration of Fairey’s work to-date. Capturing the esthetic of the OBEY brand, the shop is designed to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Hand-stenciled vintage military jackets housed in shadow boxes and wood frame silk screens line the walls of the store. There is a collection of custom spray paint cans and collages displaying plastered OBEY images from around the world.

The store features a selection of 30 hand-stenciled one-of-a-kind T-shirts, limited edition Pop-up Shop T-shirts,  commemorative Shepard Fairey May Day T-shirts, and an array of men’s and women’s OBEY clothing.

OBEY May Day Pop-Up Shop
Dates/Times: April 30th through May 16th, 2010
Weekdays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and weekends 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Location: 151 Orchard Street, NYC

melts in your mouth not on your gown

m-and-m-wrapper-dress

This tasty gown was created by Chicago-based couture designer Christina Liedtke from 600 Peanut M&M wrappers. 1,800 flowers were painstakingly hand-cut and applied in a process that took over 100 hours of labor. (Five yards of silk charmeuse and silk shantung were used for the lining.)

Check it out at Terracycle’s Green-Up shop

Open everyday 11 am - 7 pm
641 8th Ave. at 41st Street NYC at the Port Authority Bus Terminal

Now Open through May 21

save the date

In Chungking Express by Wong Kar-Wei, Cop 223’s girlfriend May broke up with him on April 1. His birthday is May 1 and he decides to wait for May for a month before moving on. Every day he buys a tin of pineapple with an expiration date of May 1. By the end of this time, he feels that he will either be rejoined with her or that their relationship will have expired forever.

I’m not sure why I like reading expiration dates on things, or the names of the women who inspect the brown paper bags…or my jeans (though I haven’t had an ‘inspected by’ tag in my new jeans’ pockets for quite sometime. Do they do that anymore?)

Melanie Favreau has taken notice of the ubiquitous little expiration date tags found on bags of bread and has turned them into sterling silver pendants. You pick the date. They are $45 each at Supermarket.

an independent woman

Armory Arts Week is over. How overwhelming. Unfortunately, the Armory Show itself was about as underwhelming as possible. On the flip side, there was INDEPENDENT. INDEPENDENT is billed as “a hybrid model and temporary exhibition forum,” It took place at the former X Initiative and former Dia Center for the Arts at 548 West 22nd Street and it was FREE! And there were no VIP rooms! Or walls separating the galleries (which sometimes made it confusing though if you wanted to know exactly who did what).

My favorite artist in the show has to be Lisa Anne Auerbach. She is a photographer, a knitter, and a conceptual artist, mixing art and politics in ways that most everyone can relate to. And she likes bicycles.

We’ve all done stupid things at one time or another. Wear your accomplishments on your sleeve…or better yet, fill up a sash. Who says girl scouts have to have all of the fun…
