back to the futura

Verdana was invented by Microsoft for use on a computer screen. To me it
says “default” font and it looks really crappy as display type (can you spell
k-e-r-n-i-n-g?)…so why did Ikea decide to change their catalog typeface from Futura to Verdana? In an interview with Swedish design magazine CAP&Design, the reason given for the change is to be able to use the same font in all countries, including Asian countries where characters in the current Futura font are unavailable. Also they want the online and print versions to be consistent. Ughhhh.

i love twiglets

150twiglets-32

Twiglets are the most amazing things. They are crunchy wholegrain sticks baked in a yeast extract (so they taste like Marmite). They are a very light brown color and the yeast extract gives them darker brown patches and spots. They look like twigs, hence the name. You either love or hate these things. They taste like burnt something I can’t quite put my finger on. I looooooooove them.

Problem is…they’re made in England and expensive to come by in the states. My friend John just sent me a case of them. What a huge surprise. Thanks John!

My favorite things at the gift show this year have got to be the ‘Family’ chairs by  Lina Nordqvist for Design House Stockholm.  I need to start a family just so I can have these chairs…or will the chairs just become my family? Either way,  this is what Design House Stockholm says about them on their site:

Not every chair is created equal. Especially not Family Chairs by Lina Nordqvist, a foursome of traditional Swedish stickback chairs. Separately they present themselves as individuals, unique chairs aspiring to be something more than just pieces of furniture. Together they form a boisterous family, with each one displaying a distinctive character. Even the horizontal spindles between the chair legs play their part in the game.
“I’m fascinated by objects, and I like it when they have their own special individuality, something beyond mere technical function. That’s why I decided on a graduation project atBeckmans College of Design in which I transformed something well-known and traditional into something unexpected.”

brooklyn’s finest

brokelyn

I absolutely love this logo for Brokelyn.com, a blog about living on the cheap in Brooklyn. It was designed by The Heads of State, the design studio of Jason Kernevich and Dustin Summers. These guys do some amazing work.

Another one of my faves from Brooklyn is the Brooklyn Bunny logo by DresserJohnson, the talented team of Kevin Dresser and Kate Johnson. I love their work as much as I love watching, Roebling, their soft bunny who has spent much of his life on  public view in hard Brooklyn…
